MIT SAAS Culture Show: A Million Dollar Hit

MIT SAAS celebrated its annual cultural show 'SAPNE' on April 3, 2009 at the Kresge Audotorium. SAPNE, meaning "dream" in English, provided the audience with more South Asian culture in one night than one could ever imagine! The  Culture Show is an annual event showcasing the diverse talents and love for South Asian culture that exists within MIT. Like every year, Kresge was filled to capacity with students, family, faculty, and those who appreciate South Asian culture from the greater Boston area. The students and the show displayed various South Asian cultural acts including Bharatanatyam, Bhangra, Bollywood and Garba/Raas.

SAAS was awarded the MIT Undergraduate Program of the Year Award for Culture Show 2006 and 2008 at the Student Leaders Recognition Reception by the Student Life Programs Office!

Each year the program selects a charity to partner with. This year the partnership was with Nanhi Kali, an NGO that supports education for underprivileged female children in India.

This year's program was titled Sapne and it followed Jay Kapoor an MIT student who must win a popular TV show in order to fulfill his own "Sapne" or dreams.

The program opened with Entwined: A Jugalbandi of Kathak and Bharatanatyam choreographed by Shubhi Goyal, Kavya Kamal Manyapu, Renuka Ramanathan, Sandya Rawal, Anjali Thakkar and Chandini Valiathan, The dance was presented by MIT Natya.

This was followed by Bollywood numbers  Men in Heat choreographed by Varun Chirravuri and Demario Dayton.Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin choreographed by Shibhi Goyal and Anjali Muralidhar and Sapne Mein Naach choreographed by Prarthna Desai , Akansha Kumar and Sonya Makhni.

MITRaas presented a Raas choreographed by Shikha Kaji and Nehal Patel.

MIT's fusion team Chamak presented  a choreography by Sonia Nijhawan and Sarina Siddhanti.This was followed by Southie Dance , a film medley from South Indian films choreographed by Varun Chirravuri and Aarthi Ramarathnam.

MIT Swara, which is MIT"s classical music group directed by Saloni Jain and Mathura Sridharan presented classical music.MIT Bhangara came next choreographed by Kapil Dilwali and Samir Zaidi. Another bollywood number choreographed by Gita Sritvatsava and Mrinalinit Tavag followed. Bollowood Babes choreographed by Akansha Kumar and Sonia Nijhawan, Dillagi by Jayanthi Jayakumar, Anila Sinha and Nina Suresh, Culture Shock ..Reborn by Adlai Grayson, Komal Patel, Aarthi Ramarathnam and Samir Zaidi Marjaani by Atul Kapila and Joyatee Sarkar brought the show to a close.

A fun event indeed!
