The Indian Business Club (IBC), a part of Sangam - the Indian Students' Association at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is hosting its sixth annual Global Indus Technovators Award (GITA'08). The Global Indus Technovators Awards recognize and felicitate distinguished young innovators of South Asian origin working at the confluence of technology, research and entrepreneurship. The awards emphasize the need to honor young, upcoming individuals; and focus on emerging technologies that are bound to have a far-reaching impact on the world as we know it today. To this end, the awards target young innovators below 40 years of age.
The awards recognize innovators, from either a technical or entrepreneurial perspective, in five broad categories: Biotechnology, Healthcare and Medicine; Information Technology; Materials and Devices; Energy; and Grassroots Technology/Developmental Work. We also welcome nominations that may not directly fit one of the above broad categories. Nominations are evaluated based on their ingenuity, potential impact, breakthrough in invention or discovery, entrepreneurial initiative and commercial potential.

Nominations are invited through an open nomination call. The nominations are publicized in North America, Europe and Asia. In past years, nominations were received from about 15 countries over the world. The nominations received are evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges. Awardees are felicitated in a ceremony held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the end of the year. The Judges for the GITA awards have included eminent researchers, and prominent personalities in the industry and venture capitalist arenas. In the past few years, the judging panels have included Gururaj "Desh" Deshpande (Chairman, Co-Founder, Sycamore Networks), Kiran Mazumdar (Managing Director, Biocon), Philip Sharp (Institute Professor, MIT Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine, 1993), Subra Suresh (Dean, School of Engineering, MIT), R. A. Mashelkar (Director-General, CSIR), Narayana Murthy (Founder and Chief Mentor, Infosys). Please have a look at our website for the complete list of judges.
