"Tamil Language and Literature"

The origin of Tamil language and its use in India is a topic of active research by the scholars today. The earliest known inscriptions in Tamil date back to approximately 500 BC, the oldest literary text Tolkappayam was possibly composed around 200 BC. Through the royal patronage over a long period, Tamil has established itself as the major cultural medium for literary, political and religious expressions for a populace spreading from South India to Sri Lanka, Mauritius, Malaysia and up to Vietnam. The talk will discuss the evolution of the language,the script, grammar and development of literature to the current time. Literary and colloquial forms of the language will be presented throughrecitations and conversations.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Uma Nellaippan is a poet and scholar in Tamil language. After receiving her PhD for analyzing the narrative beauty in old Tamil texts, she has been busy in teaching the language through school and community organizations in Greater Boston area for more than a decade.

Lectures and events are free and everyone is cordially invited. A 30 minute question and answer session follows each lecture. Harvard University Science Center is located at 1 Oxford Street in Cambridge.

Earlier in 2008, there were lectures on other Indian languages attended by many and delivered and performed with insightful material in to different languages such as Sanskrit.; Hindi; Gujarati; Marathi; Punjabi ; Urdu; Nepali; Bengali; Kashmiri; Sindhi and also on Vedic languages.
