The Call for Service
Boston, MA and in more than 1000 communities nation-wide
On September 27, 2008, citizens from every neighborhood of Boston will stand together on the Boston Common to share testimonials on the power of service in their lives and communities as part of the Boston ServiceNation Day of Action. Citizens and a few key legislators will be sharing their personal life-changing stories of service and about the importance of service in our communities, as well as to call for an expansion of service opportunities for all Americans. After the testimonials, there will be a musical celebration and an Opportunities Fair, which will offer ways in which citizens can take action and give back through service, volunteering, and social initiatives. From the Common, people will then disperse to participate in other smaller Day of Action service and action events happening throughout the city.
The ServiceNation Boston Steering Committee, representing service organizations and educational institutions including Citizen Schools, City Year, Teach For America, World Teach, the Academy of the Pacific Rim, and Boston University, among others, is working hard to plan this extraordinary event to make history in Boston and in the country.
ServiceNation is a national movement to expand service opportunities for all Americans and to promote a culture of service that will help America solve its greatest challenges. Alan Khazei, co-founder of City Year and one of the most influential social entrepreneurs of our time, started Be the Change, Inc., the organization that birthed the ServiceNation Campaign. Alan and ServiceNation envision an America in which one million Americans serve in full and part-time service programs by 2020 and 100 million Americans volunteer annually. Innovative organizations and programs such as City Year, Citizen Schools and others have demonstrated that by engaging citizens in service, not only do we begin to address some of our society's most pressing problems in tangible and effective ways, but we also build an active citizenry who is prepared and motivated to play a vital role in our democracy.
The ServiceNation campaign will harness the power of citizens on September 27th, 2008, our National Day of Action. On this Saturday, we will hold at least 2000 events all around the country to demonstrate the importance of service and to share stories of service and its impact in our communities. This day will release the energy of the thousands of organizations and individuals that serve this country every day.
ServiceNation, in partnership with TIME Magazine, is also hosting a Summit in New York City September 11-12th, just two weeks before the Day of Action. More than seventy of the most influential and iconic national and political figures will be joining together to discuss the importance of service in our country. On the anniversary of 9/11, figures such as Caroline Kennedy, Alma Powell, Usher, Senator Barack Obama and Senator John McCain will come togetehr to call for an active citizenry and dedication to service.
