Music Review: Hijack

HIJACK, an action thriller starring Shiney Ahuja has a lot of firsts to it. It is a debut directorial venture of Kunal Shivdasani, with musical debut by Justin-Day and lyricist Kumaar.  Shiney Ahuja has been associated with some chartbuster music including Hazaron Khwaishen Aisi, Gangster, Who Lamhe and Bhool Bhulaiyya.  So how does HIJACK fare?

Let us begin with ‘Aksar’. Opening with a single string guitar strum followed with an impressive presentation by Kay Kay sets the tone for a well-orchestrated romantic number. The piece is good enough to be featured in the promos and is good enough to appear four times in different versions on the track.

In the ‘Unplugged version’ Shaan goes for a solo. It is almost 7 minutes long but quite beautiful. He has another version in a dejected lover’s mode. The violin is wonderful here and the guitar along with Shaan’s singing really elevates the piece. The remix version is completely different.
Racy rhythm, lots of guitar strumming in the background and membranic thumps (via electronic percussions) add zest to the 'remixed' version which is suitable for clubs and discos. \

‘Dekh Dekh’ has Sunidhi Chauhan  along with Suraj Jagan and Joi in a rather Western track with lots of rhythm making it quite fast paced.  The faster paced 'club remix' version may do well at nightclubs and discotheques. The song will definitely be patronized by the GenX . Sunidhi as usual is in full form in a song that brings the thrill aspects of the movie to the fore

Shilpa Rao of the recent chartbuster ‘Khuda Jaane’ from Bachna Ae Haseeno is back with ‘Koi Na jaane’  She opens with an interesting Arabic style singing but leaves us wishing for more of her in the song. Kay Kay takes over the song which seems situational for the protagonist prays for intervention from the Almighty. One wonders if the song would play in entirety in the film's narrative since an action-thriller like Hijack risks slowing down in pace with a song like 'Koi Na Jaane' in the background.

An aircraft taking off is what begins 'Theme Of Hijack' that promises to be an engaging hear, courtesy the thriller genre that the film belongs to. However, instead of being just a theme piece with only an orchestra taking charge of the proceedings, 'Theme of Hijack' turns out to be a 'Hinglish' outing with Suraj Jagan and Uday coming behind the mike. Lots of western musical instruments (electronic plates, calypso drums, guitars and its variants like base and crunch) have been used to give a thrilling, pulsating touch to a track which will most likely be used in the background during heavy duty action sequences.

So will this be a success for Justin-Uday? Aksar has a lot of potential and definitely the whole album can claim to be not bad!
