Press Release 06/24/2008
The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners’ Boston Chapter is pleased to announce its board of directors has named Kajal K. Chattopadhyay the Fraud Fighter of the Year.
The award is presented annually to those individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the fight against fraud in Massachusetts.
Chattopadhyay was chosen for the award based upon the scope, difficulty and volume of cases he successfully prosecuted during his tenure with the Office of the Massachusetts Attorney General.
Chattopadhyay worked in the Insurance and Unemployment Fraud Division of the Office of the Attorney General from 2003 until 2008, where he prosecuted a wide range of fraud cases including property and casualty, motor vehicle, and workers’ compensation insurance fraud. As an Assistant Attorney General, Chattopadhyay tried numerous cases on charges including arson, motor vehicle insurance fraud, larceny, conspiracy, and perjury. Each of the trials Chattopadhyay handled resulted in guilty verdicts.
In 2004, Chattopadhyay handled the trial of a Cape Cod architect who set his office ablaze in order to fraudulently collect insurance proceeds. Later that year, Chattopadhyay was the lead prosecutor in a case which resulted in the conviction of the owner of an automotive repair shop in Methuen for inflicting damage to a vehicle and then submitting phony repair bills to an insurer. Thereafter, in 2007 and 2008, Chattopadhyay handled two separate perjury trials in which the defendants lied under oath to defraud their insurers. As a result of Chattopadhyay’s successes in prosecuting insurance fraud, numerous defendants were ordered to serve committed jail time and to pay thousands of dollars in restitution to defrauded victims.
Recently, Chattopadhyay left the Office of the Attorney General and accepted a position as the Deputy General Counsel of the Department of Telecommunications and Cable.
Chattopadhyay is a graduate of Hamilton College in Clinton, NY, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biopsychology. He then went to Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland where he received his Juris Doctor cum laude.
Chattopadhyay currently lives in Dover with his wife and two daughters. He grew up in western Massachusetts.
The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners is a worldwide, 30,000-member professional organization for fraud examiners. The association is dedicated to the prevention, detection and deterrence of fraud and while-collar crime.
Previous recipients of the Fraud fighter of the Year Award include Inspector General Gregory W. Sullivan, U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan, Attorney General Martha Coakley, and State Auditor Joseph DeNucci.
