Ayurvedic Approach To Heart Health Talk For The Asian Indian Community

06/11/2008

Studies reported at Stanford and University of Maryland have found that Asian Indians are three times more prone to heart disease in USA than the general population. Specifically the study reported by Stanford found that Immigrant Asian Indian men in the U.S. have a high prevalence of coronary heart disease, non insulin-dependent diabetes, lower high-density-lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels and hypertriglyceridemia. All these have “insulin resistance’’ as a common pathogenetic mechanism, which seems to be the most important risk factor. They also reported that the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) is three times higher in Asian Indian women than in women in the U.S. as a whole.

With this in mind many people are raising the question, why do those of Indian and Pakistani descent have the highest rates of heart disease, despite coming from a culture that shuns smoking, encourages a vegetarian diet and lacks many of the other classic risk factors for the disease?

“We wanted to be able to offer some solutions to this crisis that is affecting so many in our community,” remarks Sri  Lakshmi Temple President, Kumar Nochur. “Coming from our own motherland Bharat, and backed now by peer-reviewed studies from researchers inspired by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, India’s traditional knowledge of Ayurveda should be seriously considered for its  benefits by Indians who are at high risk for heart disease.”

In this seminar Steele Belok, M.D. and Professor Vaidya Vishwanath Upasani will explore what ayurveda says about heart health, risk factors, and tips for a healthy heart. They will also draw upon their vast clinical experience using ayurveda and peer-reviewed research on Maharishi Vedic Approach to HealthM, to present an evidence-based revival of the ancient time-tested ayurveda.

According to Dr. Belok, M.D., Board-certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology and Clinical Instructor at Harvard Medical School, health benefits include substantial reductions in blood pressure, insulin resistance, high cholesterol, smoking, psychological stress, and drug abuse. Studies published in major medical journals indicate slowing or reversal of hardening of the arteries, and an increase in life span for long-term Maharishi Ayurveda participants.” Dr. Belok, as Medical Director of Maharishi Vedic Health Center in Lancaster, MA. has been working for over 30 years in the field of ayurveda, with a broad spectrum of people, including many with cardiac disorders or high risk factors.

Vaidya Dr. Upasani with over 35 years of clinical and professional experience in ayurvedic medicine in India and at Maharishi Vedic Health Center in Lancaster, will be joining Dr. Belok. He will shed light on prevention and how to control the risk factors He will also explain the difference between Maharishi Vedic Approach to Health compared to ayurveda as it is commonly practiced in India . According to Upasani, “Maharishi Ayurveda offers a new understanding and practical approach to transform our health and well being based on the fact that there is a powerful source of intelligence and healing available deep within our own mind and body. We need to return to our roots--to our own inner intelligence, the physician within.”

Acaarya Professor Subbarayudu K.B., Ph.D. will conclude with a spiritual perspective on heart health and the efficacy of Consciousness-Basedsm education programs to root out the cause of heart disease in the Indo-Indian community. Professor Subbarayudu, well known in the Boston area, is a leading scholar in Vedanta and Sanskrit Literature.
