Five Thousand People to Breathe Away Stress Volunteers of the Art of Living Foundation Launch a Week-Long Initiative to Create a “Violence-Free Stress-Free Americaâ€
No stranger to high pressure situations, Jonathan Tang took the Art of
Living course a few years ago when he was dealing with the stress of
increased responsibility at work. “Being a venture
capitalist is a difficult job and my breathing practice has helped me
throughout my career in many ways. Without my daily practices, I don't
think I would have been able to thrive in the challenging moments of
running a business and being an investor†says Tang, MD Red Rooster
Venture Capital. Brooke Bartletta, mother of two and
photographer agrees. “The Art of Living Course taught me how to take
both accumulated and every day stress and tension and diffuse it with
the simple act of breathing. Upon finishing the course, I felt like
someone had re-charged my "batteriesâ€, says Brooke who lives with her
family in Hingham. Christine Bortnyk a student at the Boston
University said, "After following the Art of Living's 20 minute daily
practice for 9 months, the change in me has been radical and wonderful.
My parents are stunned and inspired to take the class. My grades have
skyrocketed because my focus is now so intent.†Christine now actively
volunteers for the organization. As a part of Art of Living
Foundation’s “Violence-Free Stress-Free America†campaign, about 120
cities across the country will host Art of Living’s Part 1 Course in
June 2008. More than 5,000 Americans are expected to participate in the
course that week. In the Greater Boston area, the courses will be held
at Boston College, Bolton/Boxboro, Hingham in MA and Nashua in NH from June 6-10. For more details, please visit www.artofliving.org.
Stress is the number one health problem in America, with stress levels
escalating rapidly in adults, children, teenagers and the elderly,
according to the American Institute of Stress. Stress in an individual
is not only detrimental to health and emotional well-being; it’s also a
key trigger of violent behavior. In the Art of Living course,
participants learn unique breathing techniques designed to reduce their
stress, consequently decreasing violence and increasing human values in
the country. The cornerstone of the Art of Living course is
the Sudarshan KriyaTM, an innovative breathing practice developed by
renowned spiritual leader and humanitarian His Holiness Sri Sri Ravi
Shankar. The technique is based on the yogic principle that the breath
possesses specific rhythms that can be used to naturally detoxify and
energize the body. Independent studies of the Sudarshan Kriya show that
it lowers cortisol (the "stress hormone") and cholesterol, and provides
relief from depression and other symptoms of stress such as insomnia,
fear, anxiety and grief.
