An explosion of rhythm and melody resounded through the
Sander’s theater as the Tabla Maestro Zakir Hussain and his percussion ensemble
played to a full house on Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the Sanders Theatre. The event was hosted by World Music. Hussain, who has achieved superstar status in the World of Music,
presented a program that could appeal to the novice and the expert alike. For the
novice there were the simple instructional compositions while the expert was
treated to very interesting compositions that showcased the vidwat of the master.
The audience was particularly appreciative of the interesting sounds from the
nature imitated on the Tabla by Hussain. In the melodic section of the presentation we had Niladri
Kumar on Sitar and Dilshad Khan on the Sarangi accompanied by Hussain and his
brother Fazal Quereshi who played the table and the Kanjira. Vijay Chauhan
played the Dholak. Later Abbos Kosimov the famous percussion master from Uzbekistan
took center stage with enchanted the audience with his Doyra. Taufiq Quereshi has a scintillating performance on western
percussion. Meitei Pung Cholom Performing Troupe, the dancing drummer of
Manipur played and danced with their drums. The event clearly showed the universal nature of music
blending music from around the world. The passion for music and the musical
expertise was clearly showcased in the presentation and for the audience it was clear that fine music is
that which emanates from the hands of the master and reaches the very depths of
the soul of listener. You may also access this article through our web-site http://www.lokvani.com/ |
