Fifteen women came eagerly to the workshop organized by Saheli and the South Asian Women’s Collaborative (SAWC) of Harvard University. Held at Cambridge Public Library, 45 Pearl Street on April 24th, the classroom was full. Enthusiastic students worked away busily at their computers, fully engrossed, hoping to find a ‘dream ‘job right away. They were immigrants from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, Sudan and Guyana. There was even one American!!!
The workshop facilitators, four students, led the discussion with lots of energy, in a fun and interactive way. They gave away a folder full of useful tips and ideas. They showed where one can go on the web to find jobs, how to respond to an online job posting, how to write a letter and create a ‘winning’ resume. Every participant in this free workshop went away with a smile on her face. It is popularly believed that the interview is much more important than the details in the resume.
These informal and free workshops are offered by Saheli periodically to empower the immigrant community.
