The film has screened in some prestigious film festivals including Toronto, Pusan, Dubai and Houston. In fact in the recently concluded Houston International film festival, it swept the top 3 awards - Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Music.
The film is a sweeping David Lean style epic - presented by Merchant Ivory, and directed by Santosh Sivan (The Terrorist, Ashoka). Set in the 1930s in Kerala, it is a romantic drama charting an illicit love affair between a British tea plantation owner and his Indian housekeeper, within the context of the emerging Independence movement. Shot in the hills of Munnar by the master himself - Santosh Sivan - the cinematography is simply breathtaking.
The New York Times Review calls it a "Fatal culture clash, imperialist entitlement, forbidden passion between
master and servant: the ingredients of the Indian director Santosh Sivan’s
period piece".
