Sri Lakshmi Temple Offers Scholarship For Excellence

The Sri Lakshmi Temple in Ashland, MA has instituted seven scholarships for graduating high school seniors to recognize academic merit, excellence in classical dance, carnatic and Hindustani music.
“We are pleased to announce that the temple board has approved the awarding of seven scholarships to be given specifically to graduating high school seniors to be used for their college education. One academic merit scholarship will be given to a student graduating from Ashland high school and another from the Framingham high school. We have three arts scholarships, one for classical dance, one for Hindustani music and another for Carnatic music. We also have two scholarships one for a girl and another for a boy directly from the temple†said Rajagopal who represents the Youth Cultural and Educational Programs wing of the temple. The temple will hold the contest for Hindustani Music on Feb 17 2008. Please contact the coordinator shuchita_rao@yahoo.com for further information. The temple also invites participation in the Hindustani music day and Nrityanjali from all artists in the area.

Hindustani Music Day – Feb 17 2007
On Sunday,17th February 2008 at Sri Lakshmi Temple (Lower level, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm)
Program will start sharp at 8:30 AM and this day-long event is open to students to render Hindustani classical Music. We request the area music teachers to join us by encouraging their students to participate in the event. Students can present vocal or instrumental Hindustani Classical Music as individual solo performance or a group performance (Maximum of 4 per group). Our goal is to help and encourage youth to learn Hindustani Music and hence the recommended age group is 5 to 25 years. Each item (solo or group) can be up to a maximum of10 minutes in length. Teachers need to collect a $10 fee per participant per item that will go towards planning future youth activities at Sri Lakshmi Temple- NEHTI YCEP.
This year NEHTI YCEP is proud to announce a $1000 scholarship for one talented Hindustani musician who is currently a high school senior. NEHTI YCEP gives this scholarship in the hope that the student will make classical music a part of their life and not stop after leaving high school.

The program will be from 2:00 PM through 7:00 PM
* We invite Devotional Dances based on any Classical or Folk Dance form, with songs based on any language. * Each dance should be for a maximum duration of 10 minutes. * All participants are requested to send email to nrityanjali2008@yahoo.com * If you are learning from a local teacher, please send your nomination through your teacher * We request teachers to send the complete list of participants. * While we will try to accommodate all requests, we will handle requests on a first-come-first-serve basis.
A donation of $20.00 per item per participant is requested. Teachers are requested to collect the money from their students and bring a check to the temple written out to NEHTI YCEP. Students who have no designated teacher will pay at the temple on February 23, 2008.

We hope this student will dedicate themselves to the cause of dance.
