India Day At Acton Library

The Acton Boxborough Cultural Council sponsored a celebration of Indian Culture at the Acton Memorial Library in Acton, MA on Dec 9 2007 as part of the “Our World†series. The event was a colorful smorgasbord of dance, variety entertainment, Yoga and art display tasteful presented by Indian American members of the Acton-Boxborough community.
Padmaja Kuchimanchi who served as the chair for the event invited the organization “Khelmel†to put together a children’s variety show. Tiny tots presented a variety of Bollywood , Bhangara and Garba numbers dressed in dazzling outfits. The organizers conducted a brief demonstration of Bhangara and Dandia and had many members of the audience dancing
Sangita Raghunathan and Suman Adidesh presented Nattavarataruni, in set to Ragam Kadanakuthukalam in Bharatanatyam style. Their perfectly synchronized movements made the choreography sparkle. Sangita then proceeded to present the familiar Surdas bhajan Maiyya Mori.
Brides and Bridegroom of India had children between the ages of 3 – 8 wearing outfits representative of the different states. They were adorable. This was followed by a fashion show. A puppet show on the Ramayana by Khelmel brought the event to a nice conclusion.
The visitors also had a chance to try out a Saree, paint their hands with Henna and try out some delectable Indian goodies. Praveen Sahay, an experienced Yoga practitioner did a lecture-demonstration on the subject. The Indian food was provided by Little Market Grocery store of Acton.
Following this event in the series will be Chinese Cultural Day to be held on Feb 2 2008.
