Sanskrit Classes At Sri Lakshmi Temple

Press Release
09/19/2007

The fall semester of the Sanskrit classes at the Sri Lakshmi Temple is scheduled to begin on Sunday, September 30, 2007.  The classes have been offered at the Temple since 2000 and there will be six levels of classes offered this year.  Classes are held Sundays at the Temple premises and are designed for adults who wish to study the Indian scriptural material with the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.  The class size is maintained small and individual attention is given to each student.  Classes are free, but regular attendance is required.   Classes meet at the apartment halls next to the Temple building in Ashland.  More details and the directions to the Temple are available at the Temple website  http://www.nehti.org

The students are initially trained to read Sanskrit fluently in Devanagari script in order to be able to participate in chanting and recitation.  They move on to formal training in grammar with its increasing level of complexity and applications.   To develop a comprehensive knowledge of grammar might take
approximately three years for a novice student.  Regular studying and participation in homework activity are strongly recommended.  A special class on Panini’s Ashtadhayi is offered since 2006 to appreciate the work of the great grammarian, who established the rules that have remained the basis of all language applications .  A new class on scriptural reading for vocabulary training and grammar is being offered this year.

The assembly for all new and continuing students will be held at 10 AM on September 30, at the Priestquarters Basement Hall.  The students will be assigned to respective classes and the classes will commence that day.  The classes will run for sixteen weeks with a test in February to monitor progress and to assign levels.  The Spring semester will begin in February and will run through June.

For registration and other information, interested students may contact Dr Bijoy Misra at bmisra@fas.harvard.edu or calling him at 781-259-0029.
