New England South Asian Artists to Showcase Works at Sahayta Cancer Charity Art Exhibition
Art exhibition to raise proceeds for Cancer patients in India
Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society in Boston, the local chapter of one of North India’s main Cancer charities, announced that it will host an exhibition of South Asian art at the Boston Sculptor’s Gallery and Bernard Toale’s Gallery in the city’s South End on March 30, 2007 (the galleries are within close proximity of one another). Works by 12 prominent New England based South Asian painters, sculptors, photographers and film makers will be showcased, and attendees will be able to meet the artists, discuss the works and participate in a silent auction of donated art.
In addition to the art exhibition, a breakout session will feature six artists who, through their art, will portray the effect of 9/11 on the South Asian Diaspora. Artists attending include Ambreen Butt, winner of the 2006 Maud Morgan Prize at the Museum of Fine Art and Valerie Kaur, producer of “Divided We Fallâ€. Other artists include Aparna Agarwal, Mahendar Paul, Ayesha Khan, Lucilda Cooper, Fozia Vasowalla, Gabriel Brown, Noel Bonam, Naaem Mohamien, Sarbani Hazra and Aziz Ahmed. The main art exhibition will be held at the Boston Sculptor’s Gallery, while the 9/11 session will be held at Bernard Toale’s gallery; attendees are free to move between the galleries.
All proceeds of the event will go towards supporting Cancer patients and their respective obligations in India. “This event will showcase artwork by some of the most talented South Asian artists in the United States, while enabling Sahayta to raise money to provide holistic support for underserved populations afflicted with Cancer in India,†said Aman Khaira, President of Sahayta Boston. “While we have received tremendous interest in the event, we are still seeking to fill the lead event sponsor slot.â€
More than 150 professionals and students are expected to attend. Wine (21+) and hors d'oeuvres will be served. The event will be from 6:30 pm – 10:30 pm.

About Sahayta
Sahayta, which means help and support in Hindi, is a non-profit organization based in the city of Chandigarh in Northern India. Its mission is to provide holistic - financial, emotional and social - support to people afflicted with Cancer. The organization’s primary projects include providing free radiation and chemotherapy treatment, funding the education of children from Cancer afflicted families, organizing recreational therapy programs and holding Cancer awareness/educational clinics in parts of India where medical care may be relatively inaccessible. Sahayta has helped over 1000 Cancer patients and families in the last nine years and is entirely volunteer run.
The Boston chapter of Sahayta was launched in July 2006 to create awareness of the growing Cancer epidemic in India and to raise funds for the parent organization. The team, consisting of a small, but highly entrepreneurial group of young professionals, has raised funds by organizing events and soliciting donations from individuals and corporations. Through these events and the team’s impassioned commitment, the chapter raised more than $10,000 in the period between July and December 2006.
Sahayta Charitable Welfare Society is a recognized 501(c)(3) U.S. non-profit organization.
