In India there is always an inner urge for the youth to go abroad with the idea of easy money-making and easy life whether or not they know the life style abroad. Is it a wise idea........? Are all Indians who go abroad satisfied and happy living there?
People come to the United States mostly seeking jobs and to improve their financial status. There are some who come with the idea that life in US is a piece of cake and only in this land will people survive happily. Then comes the revelation after 3 or 4 years. The Indian mind compares this life to the life in India. It's always a far more comfortable closer to home where you belong - a place where you always have someone to back up at times of distress. Here you have to be your own, facing everything all alone. There is no one truly behind you at all times. Indians are a kind of lonely beings in the United States.
Those who come to the United States with the idea of improving their standard of life, have to undergo six months of horrible winter here, mostly have to work 24/7, even have to calculate the number of times you call India..............but you own a house and a car and take pride that you visited WashingtonDC, Disney world, New York and Niagara.... Despite all the material comforts this country offers, there is a vague discontent in the Indian minds which makes the desire of returning home grow stronger. You say a "Hi" to every Indian you meet in the United States, exchange smiles with the neighbours, and you do not meet them for a long time until there is a community gathering or a get together or atleast without proper appointments. Indian women who come to the US for their husband's work, are deprived of their freedom to work in this country being in the "dependant visas."
You teach Tamil or Telugu or Hindi to your kids, they easily speak English and spanish. You teach slokas, how to wear a saree and how to perform poojas, when christian philosophy is taught in school, they get confused. Any culture has to be developed or inherited from childhood. It's not successful when taught.Hence we struggle a lot to enforce the goodness and richness of our Indian culture in our little ones.Besides it's not like in India, our kids can easily socialize with the neighbour's kids. Weather doesn't permit them to play outside either especially in the east coast. Hence, it becomes difficult for the parents to entertain and engage the children at home. The little ones are also deprived of the love of the grandparents which everyone cherish for life. You cannot get your parents here from India without a valid reason !!
On seeing my 7 year old daughter, an American says,"How beautiful she is !! I'm sure she will have a lot of boy friends falling for her when she grows up", -----It's said as a compliment. But to me, [an Indian mother] it's a scary thought in a different society.
India today, has a better infrastructure, better shopping malls and better facilities like in USA and other western countries. The lifestyle of an average Indian has improved tremendously over the decade. Even the houses are built with all the facilities like those in the western countries. The NRIs returning to India enjoy the life of a first class citizen in India.
May be these are certain things which makes Indians get back to India, for a life in a known place, despite the fun and richness of this soil. Perhaps the life in United States, makes Indians realize after a period of time, that life out of US is good too. Home is where the heart is. Both ends has its own plus and minus. It depends on what we choose to live with. It will be good for anyone to get experienced globally like in the United States with a developed economy and then make a transition to India to enjoy a life of their choice.
