It was a beautiful Sunday on June 8 and an excited group of youth and their families gathered at Brooksvale park in Hamden, CT for the 3rd Annual Walk/Bike-A-Thon of North South Foundation, Connecticut chapter. The event had a good turnout despite the short notice, busy school year-end, and other activities of children.
Honorable Carl Amento, the mayor of Hamden attended the walk-a-thon and was impressed by the foundation's effort.
Like last year, the youth supported two local
charities, Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic of New Haven and Rainbow House of Waterbury. However, majority of the funds are intended for scholarships
for the brightest but needy students in India.
Ms.Guillepsie, a blind walker sponsored by the charity, Recording for the Blind and
Dyslexic shared a memorable moment with the mayor when she recognized his name and his voice. The two had a surprise re-union of sorts as both attended the same high school some 30 years ago!
While the younger children participated in the coloring contest, the
youth
came up with some impressive ideas in the essay contest. The topic
could not
have been more appropriate (The Role of Asian Indians in the Global
Fight
Against Terrorism].
This event raised around 20 scholarships for poor but merit students in
India.
The MA chapter walk/bike event is slated for June 23rd, Sunday between
11 am
to 3 pm in Hopkinton State Park, Hopkinton, MA. Lunch is provided and
games
for children will be organized
