09/21/2006 Atul Gawande, 40, a surgeon and author at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston is the recipient of a $500,000 "genius" award from the John D & Catherine T MacArthur Foundation. The award has been given this year to 22 other accomplished men and women.Gawande, also a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine and author of the "Notes of a Surgeon" column for the New England Journal of Medicine, examines ways to prevent human error in surgery. One of his innovations is a bar code on instruments and sponges to prevent surgeons from accidentally leaving them in patients. Another South Asian Shahzia Sikander, is a painter merging the traditional South Asian art of miniature painting with contemporary forms and styles to create visually compelling, resonant works on multiple scales and in a dazzling array of media.It is indeed a wonderful honor.
