March 6th is the election date for Lexington’s Town Selectmen and School Committee. This year Ravi Sakhuja, a long time resident of the town and a town meeting member is trying his bid for a place in the School Committee. Vinod and Shikha Kapoor, residents of Lexington hosted a breakfast recently for the town residents in support of his candidature.

Ravi Sakhuja has volunteered his time through his efforts on the Lexington Energy Conservation and No Place for Hate committees and as a Town Meeting member. He is also been a City Year Board member for 12 years.According to one supporter “Education is clearly very important to Ravi. Though his own children are grown, he still pays close attention to what is going on in the Lexington Public Schools”. Following the Youth Risk Behavior Survey done in the spring of 2005 Sakhuja was instrumental in creating the Lexington Center for Parents and Youth which supports positive communication in families.

All these and various other issues came up when more than 25 families attended and discussed at length as to what will make the Lexington schools more effective. According to Sakhuja “Much attention had been paid on the budget each year leading to overrides, and while that is a major issue, his focus would clearly be on enriching the schools’ Curriculum and Instruction, two areas that needed attention to maintain the competitive edge that Lexington schools are known for and prepare them for a global marketplace. Questioned on how he hopes to achieve this, Sakhuja said that “there is no set formula but if asked to make some touch decisions on cuts etc, he would like to focus more on “quality rather than quantity” in the school curriculum.

Sakhuja would also like to bring his business acumen to work for more financial analysis and planning in the schools with the team he hopes to work, if elected. He concluded by saying that all of us in the town, value education and a “good education is the only differentiator for a good future” a thought that resonated with all those present.
