Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could
only do a little. -- Edmund

Today is World AIDS day. It's being marked with events
taking note of the millions who've died from the disease and highlighting
campaigns to control it. About 40 million people worldwide are infected with
HIV, the virus that causes acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS. Some
three million are expected to die of AIDS this year. In India,
some 70 HIV-infected women stepped forward during a rally in Golaghat, a town
in eastern Assam
state, to acknowledge that they were infected and that they should not be
shunned.
India’s
Prime Minister urged youth leaders to lead by example and lead from the front.
Secondly he asked them to inform their friends and empower them to make safe
choices and Act locally to create a global impact! Third, he asked them to
promise to uphold the dignity of every person living with HIV in our country by
love, affection, and social support. This week; New England
is holding a series of events highlighting this issue. IHO is hosting the 2005
AIDS in India
conference and a function is beign held in giving away the ‘Putting Health on the
Map Award’.
Education is the key to all these efforts and that is also
very evident in our top story for this fortnight. Dilip K Datta, a Math Professor
from Rhode Island talks to us about his new book ‘Indian Inspiration and
Western Karma†and the fascinating story behind it. We also feature Sulochana
Govardhan, who talks to us about growing up in a illustrious musical family.
AAINA holds its 4th Annual night with Steven A. Baddour,
State Senator, First Essex District who will be introducing key note Speaker
Tom Reilly, Massachusetts Attorney General . Other interesting events to check
out are the enterprising TYE forum geared for young adults.
We welcome your feedback, suggestions, comments and wishes
as we strive to bring the best of the community to you.
Enjoy the beginning of the holiday season!
