Sanjeevani Kukreja 06/29/2005 Next Generation Foundation (NGF) showcased Kabir Sen and his hip-hop band at the Dakshin Restaurant on Saturday, 17th June 2005. This event was organized to reintroduce NGF to the general public, increase public awareness of NGF goals and get the community involved in NGF and its activities. Next Generation Foundation (NGF) is a socio-charitable organization based in Shrewsbury MA, striving to create a revolutionary drive within people to make the social changes that humanity needs. One of the missions stated on the website of NGF is supporting education of underprivileged children. So in keeping with their commitment to children they organized a children friendly all ages Hip Hop event Kabir Sen, a professional musician from Cambridge enthralled the audience of about 30 people with his lively hip-hop music. Hip Hop culture is defined as a movement which is expressed through various artistic elements like MC'ing, DJ'ing, writing (Aerosol Art), several dance forms (which include Breaking, Up-Rocking, Popping, and Locking) and the element which holds the rest together: Knowledge. In an interview given over email to this writer, when asked what Hip Hop meant to him, Kabir wrote, "Hip Hop has given me a voice and an opportunity to channel my creative energy both as a lyricist and as a musician..." Kabir has been into hip-hop music since his 5th grade. "By the time I went to college at Wesleyan University I was writing a lot of my own rhymes and learning how to make beats and produce songs...I started writing songs at a very young age (12 or 13 I think) and writing raps became the next phase in my creative process.... I guess it was more than just a phase though because I continue to write rhymes and songs all the time...." says the songwriter who teaches music for school children at Shady Hill School and BB&N in Cambridge (www.mckabir.com) Jeff Miller one of the people who attended the event said, "Most hip hop I think is too much inappropriate language. Kabir has very beautiful language and has beautiful things to say." Kabir’s rendition of 'Eyes wide open' and a beautiful song about India was wonderful and thought provoking. A couple of Kabir's students Michael Hanify and Jack also sang and danced respectively to the beat of Kabir's band. Peo Nathan current President, Sadanand Bhagvat Trustee of NGF India and Praveen Rodrigo founded NGF on 15th August 2001. Rajan Viswanathan - Fundraising Committee Director and also the co-owner of Dakshin plans to hold fundraising events for NGF in the future to fund the initiatives of the organization.
