Press Release 05/05/2005
With the arrival of spring weather and the new blossoms, New England Hindu community is getting ready to share their cultural and diverse heritage with others in the annual Hindu Heritage Day on Saturday, May 21, 2005, 5:00 PM at Marlborough Middle School, 25 Union Street, Marlborough, MA 01752. As in the past years, the event would showcase area’s best artists in a cultural program followed by a sumptuous vegetarian feast. Booths for children’s activities, information on books, camps, and cultural schools for children, boutiques, and snacks would be available before the cultural show that would provide an opportunity for mingling and socializing. This year’s theme is “Matritva” or Motherhood. Hindus worship God in forms of Divine Mother as Devi. Devi Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kali are worshipped as bestowers of knowledge, wealth, and strength respectively. A mother is respected for bearing (dharani), birth (janani) and sustenance (bharani). The Nature, the earth, the rivers, and the cows sustain us as well with their life giving gifts and are honored in Hindu literature and culture just like mothers. The Hindu Heritage Day attracts participation from many organizations that present the rich Hindu traditions to area residents. The nominal admission charge of $10 for adults and $5 for children (6 to 15) covers the show that includes the dinner. Families with children are encouraged to come by 5 PM so that they can participate in many planned activities. It is with great pleasure that the organizing committee invites all to join the celebrations.
