Ranjani Saigal 03/24/2005 Music, food and fun marked the IITSINE winter social that was held at the Lexington Lodge of the Elks on March 5th 2005. Over a hundred IIT alumni from the New England area attended the event. The list of attendees included IIT alum, their friends and family. President Vinay Aggrwal presented a few opening remarks and introduced Suresh Shenoy, who is the coordinator for IIT2005 event, a pan IIT meet to be held in Washington DC. Shenoy spoke about the upcoming event. “Beyond Technology the event is bringing together not only alumni and current students of the IITs, but also luminaries from industry and academia from around the world for three days of community, knowledge-sharing, thought leadership, and networking” said Shenoy. He urged people to attend the event. A variety entertainment program followed. Sangeeta Saxena presented a opening bhajan. This was followed by a presentation by Nita Aggarwal (Alum IIT Delhi) and her two children. Arun Saigal and Shreyas Ravi played a few familiar hindi tunes on the violin. Swami Saxena had everyone dancing the Bols from his Dhol. Nivedita Muralidhar and Sonam Diliwali presented a dance set to remix of some old familiar tunes, while Amrita Saigal, Vinisha Patel and Komal Patel presented a couple of dances set to the current bollywood hits. Sanjay Saxena (Alum IIT Roorkee) regaled the audience with a wonderful Sher-O-Shayari. Dr. Vijay Kumar (Alum IIT M), Associate Provost at MIT impressed every one with his singing. The highlight of the evening was a twenty minute presentation by Dr. Ashish Nimgoankar and Ashish Kapoor (Alum, IIT Delhi). They presented a musical skit poking fun at the life of IITians. They choose popular bollywood songs which they rendered impeccably. Ashish Nimgoankar is a trained classical musician and his training and talent shone through his presentation. Ashish Kapoor provided the guitar accompaniment and they were very successful in creating an entertaining presentation. After dinner there were couple of impromptu numbers from the audience which were excellent and the presentation concluded with a beautiful rendition of the semi-classical number ‘Aaj Mana Taraptha” by Suresh Patel, who has recently moved to the Boston area. Bingo followed. There was a great sense of camaraderie. Even though the weather outside was cold, the warmth of party was enough to beat the winter blues.
