MITHAS Presents Zakir Hussain And Anoop Jalota

Press Release
03/08/2005

Two of the most celebrated musical artists in North Indian music come to Boston for the first time together. Anup Jalota has been crowned the “Emperor of Bhajan” in India for his sensitive and exciting interpretations of this traditional song genre.  Bhajans are short devotional poems, many several hundreds of years old, and often on the lips of millions who sing them regularly in homes, temples, and gatherings.  The poets Mirabai, Kabir, Surdas, and others, have a place in the hearts of the people of India—perhaps parallel to the way Shakespeare’s words are imbedded in the English-speaking world.  Often using fresh melodies, Anup Jalota has brought these verses to new life in sold-out concerts and recordings that have sold in the millions of copies.  Appearing on stage since his childhood, he is a veteran entertainer who also presents ghazals and other forms of light music in his popular programs.

Zakir Hussain, the tabla wizard, is a superstar of rhythm who has played with the most well known names of Indian and western music, from Ravi Shankar to John McLaughlin to Yoyo Ma.  The son of the late tabla genius, Alla Rakha, Zakir has appeared and scored music for several Indian films, and won acclaim from every sector of the musical world, from classical Indian to jazz to world music.  His electric presence on stage continues to dazzle standing-room-only audiences throughout the globe.
