It is not often that you get to see a world class theater production in New England that features an Indian American from New England. Sharayu Mahale, a young woman born and raised in Massachusetts landed the plum role of “PI” in the stage adaptation of "Life of Pi.

Finding your way into the acting world without any connections is not trivial and it is a testament to the amazing talent of Sharayu that she was chosen for this role. This production at the Providence Performing Arts Center is a visually stunning and emotionally compelling production that brings Yann Martel's beloved novel to life with remarkable creativity. Adapted by Lolita Chakrabarti and directed by Max Webster, the play masterfully combines innovative stagecraft, puppetry, and powerful performances to immerse the audience in Pi's extraordinary journey.

Sharayu delivers a captivating portrayal of Piscine "Pi" Patel, a teenager who survives a shipwreck and is adrift in the Pacific Ocean alongside a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. Sharayu’s performance was both intense and engaging, capturing Pi's resilience, faith, and determination as Pi navigates the challenges of survival. For those familiar with the novel, you will know that the story is very unusual and innovative.

The production's visual elements are nothing short of spectacular. The stage and lighting design create a seamless transformation from a hospital room to the vastness of the ocean, employing vibrant colors, persuasive imagery, and pulsating sound effects to depict the turmoil and uncertainty of Pi's predicament. The use of puppetry to represent the animals, particularly Richard Parker, is masterfully executed. The puppeteers' seamless and elegant movements bring a sense of majesty to the animals, enhancing the storytelling without overshadowing the human performances.

While the play is an abridged version of the novel, it retains the core message of survival and the power of belief. The adaptation allows the audience to witness Pi's incredible journey firsthand, making the experience both profound and unforgettable.

We look forward to seeing Sharyu’s career move forward brilliantly in the acting world.
