Press Release

IIT Bombay 1974 Reunion Celebrating 50 Years with a Purpose!

The IIT Bombay Class of 1974 is celebrating its Golden Jubilee by giving back in a big way! As their batch legacy project, they’ve launched HEARTS'74 (Habitat for Everyone: Affordable, Resilient, Transformative, Sustainable) to revolutionize affordable housing in India.

By leveraging technology, innovation and sustainability, this initiative will build climate-resilient homes for underserved communities. The core team from the '74 batch is driving the HEARTS'74 Project led by Narendra Goliya, Ashok Kalbag and Raj Melville.

The batch has pledged Rs 14 crore to IIT Bombay and has already raised Rs 10 crore, with Rs 8 crore of the total pledge dedicated towards the HEARTS’74 project. IITB alumni are leaving a legacy that truly makes a difference!

2024 will mark our batch’s Golden Jubilee Year, 50 years since our graduation from IIT Bombay and a milestone surely worth celebrating!

No one could have foretold in 1974 where each of us would find ourselves today, but the foundations we built at IIT surely played some part in it. As we look forward to our reunion, we are launching the Class of 1974 Legacy Project as a way for us to say thanks for all IIT Bombay has done for us, meant to us and for the amazing memories we hold and cherish.

Working with the Institute, our planning team has defined a collective Legacy Project – HEARTS74 – being supported by many of our classmates, that will focus on the design and building of affordable homes to address the daily challenge for the rural and urban underserved communities in all of India and, later, all other developing economies (For Project Details see https://iitbombay1974.org/class-legacy-project/ ; To Donate to the Class project scroll down for links).

Of course, you are free to donate to an area of your choosing instead of the collective project. (For example, Project Evergreen – student housing https://evergreen.iitbombay.org/ or Student Scholarships https://acr.iitbombay.org/givingback/scholarship-and-students-aid/ or a professorship).  The total collected amounts donated to all the various projects by our batch will be announced as our total Class Gift to the institute. We will breakout the total funds raised for the HEARTS74 Class Project and other initiatives under this total 1974 Class Gift umbrella.

You can donate directly for the HEARTS74 Class Project using one of the links below. If instead you would like to donate to one of the other causes listed above, you may do so through the links above. Please indicate your donation is part of the Class of 1974 gift for it to be counted as part of our total. If you would like to donate to any other cause at IIT Bombay, you may contact hfoffice-group@iitbombay.org for enquiries from the US, or purva.jain@iitbacr.com for India or other countries. Please check the FAQ Page if you are in the US and would like to donate through a Donor Advised Fund (DAF) or a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD).

We have set a goal of Rs 8 crores, and we have already raised a significant amount. We hope we can do considerably more! It would be wonderful if we could get everyone to participate, no matter the amount you contribute. Let’s work together to make this a truly memorable campaign!

Thank you for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the reunion events in 2025. Meanwhile do keep in touch, help spread the word with your fellow graduates, and share their contacts with us to update our mailing list. Contact us at: IITB74GJR@gmail.com
