Obituary: Dr. Tej Varna Bansal

Press Release
01/30/2025

Dr. Tej Varna Bansal (Mittal) was the first born of three siblings in Sitapur, India on August 14, 1950 to Radhey Shyam Mittal and Kunti Devi. She attended high school in Methodist Girls’ College, completing her education at Lady Harding Medical College. Soon after, she married Sudhir Bansal; their journeys took them first to England, where their son Anu (Anurag) was born. Life then brought them to the US, first settling in Rochester where she finished her medical training, and their daughter Milee (Sharmilee) was born.  They eventually moved to Rhode Island, where Tej and Sudhir resided until 2021.

During this time, her family grew to include her daughter in law Shilpa, and grandchildren Ela (18) and Radha (15) as well as her son in law Rus, and grandchildren Maya (10) and Devan (7).  Her career as physician included working at multiple state medical institutions including the Adult Correctional Institute.  She also joined the U.S. Army Reserve as a medic, and received an honorable discharge as a Captain.  In 2021, she retired, at which time Tej and Sudhir made their home in Florida.

Though quiet, Tej was the energy behind the family.  As the matriarch, her influence was evident in the lives of the beautiful children she raised, and their families.  She was always interested in entertaining, and would welcome you in her home and heart. She enjoyed needlepointing and knitting; her perfectionist nature could be seen in her finished works, many of which were gifted to her children and grandchildren. She was an avid reader and loved to ski, even after her heart surgery in 2007, until an injury in 2012.  She loved to travel, and went to see polar bears in Canada, wild life in the Galapagos, pyramids in Egypt, Antarctica, much of South America, and of course many family, friends, and historic sites in India.

Unfortunately, she also suffered from several serious medical concerns. She remained strong through it all until she peacefully passed in the arms of her loving husband on January 12, 2025.
