IAB Diwali 2024: 'Threads of India' to Illuminate Burlington with Culture and Tradition

Indian Americans for Burlington (IAB) is set to host its much-anticipated Diwali celebration on Sunday, September 29, 2024, at Burlington Commons, from 2 PM to 6 PM. This year’s theme, “Threads of India,” will bring the vibrancy of India’s traditional weaves and handicrafts to the forefront, promising an unforgettable experience of culture, community, and creativity for all who attend.

As one of the largest cultural events in Burlington, the IAB Diwali celebration has become a staple for locals eager to immerse themselves in the richness of Indian culture. With colorful performances, a fashion show, shopping opportunities, and mouth-watering cuisine, the event will highlight the spirit of Diwali—India’s Festival of light

President Deepa Agrawal shared her enthusiasm for this year’s celebration, which will feature a series of traditional and contemporary dance performances from local artists. "We want to blend tradition with modernity, showing how vibrant and alive Indian culture is today," Agrawal said. "From the rhythmic beats of classical dance forms to the fusion of modern choreography, the performances are designed to captivate audiences of all ages."

This year’s event will also spotlight young entrepreneurs in the "Kids Entrepreneurs Segment." This unique addition will allow children to showcase their innovative ideas and budding businesses. "It’s important to give the younger generation a space to express their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit," added Agrawal.

A major highlight of IAB Diwali 2024 will be the Fashion Show. The show aims to spotlight the beauty of India’s heritage textiles and weaves, emphasizing the artistry behind each piece. "It’s not just about wearing beautiful clothes," said Smita Kapadia, IAB Secretary, "but celebrating the craftsmanship and history that has been passed down through generations."

As with any great celebration, food will play a significant role. “The Treasury Kitchen,” a local favorite, will serve a variety of authentic Indian dishes, offering attendees a chance to taste the diverse flavors of India. For those looking to indulge further, henna artists will be on-site to create intricate designs, while raffles throughout the day will give attendees a chance to win exciting prizes.

The IAB Diwali celebration is not only about showcasing Indian culture but also about bringing the community together. Local officials, including members of the Burlington town select board, as well as representatives from other New England community organizations, have been invited to join in the festivities. IAB Treasurer Atul Bhammar emphasized the importance of inclusivity and community in this year’s celebration, saying, "Our theme, ‘Threads of India,’ reflects both the beauty of traditional Indian weaves and our shared values. Diwali is a festival of light, and we want to bring that warmth and light into the hearts of our community."

The IAB also acknowledged the ongoing support from the Town of Burlington and local sponsors, who have been instrumental in helping organize the annual event. "We are truly grateful for the partnership and generosity of our community," Bhammar added.

Looking Forward to a Bright Diwali With a growing interest each year, the IAB Diwali celebration is expected to draw a diverse crowd from across Burlington and beyond. The event provides a unique opportunity for attendees to experience the rich culture, traditions, and heritage of India in a fun and engaging setting. Organizers hope that the involvement of local students and artists will foster a sense of pride in cultural traditions, while also strengthening the bonds of community spirit.

The event is free and open to the public. In case of rain, a backup date has been set for October 1, 2024.
