Lokvani Team 02/23/2024 Alarming new research from MIT shows that the hourly wage needed to cover the cost of living in Massachusetts increased by more than $6 over the past year. According to MIT's Living Wage Calculator: A single adult in Massachusetts with no children, working full-time, needs to earn $27.89/hour just to support themselves in 2024, up from $21.35/hour in 2023. A couple with one child, both working full-time, need to each earn $28.38/hour just to pay for housing, food, childcare, transportation, medical costs, and other basic expenses, up from $24.72/hour in 2023. But with the state's minimum wage stuck at $15 an hour, MA families and low-wage workers have no relief from the skyrocketing cost of living. This year, we're advocating for An Act relative to raise the minimum wage, S.1200 (filed by Sen. Lewis) & H.1925 (filed by Reps. Nguyen & Donahue), which would raise the minimum wage to $20 by 2027 and index it to inflation in the future. This legislation would ultimately raise the wages of almost 1 million workers, and extend the minimum wage's protections to municipal workers like teachers' aides and school cafeteria workers who are currently excluded! It's time for $20: Click here to email your legislators right NOW and urge them to show support for legislation increasing the minimum wage in Massachusetts to $20/hr!
