Creeper pattern Rangoli signifies fertility, growth and progress. In alpana patterns the sacred art or floor painting done with hands and paint, Shankha-lata or the conch-shell creeper and Champa-lata, creeper of Champa flowers are drawn in Bengal. Different objects are also depicted as growing on creepers such as shovel or Khunti-lata, Bangles or Banti-lata, pearls or Mukta-lata. Sometimes the creeper patterns are referred to as Vansha-vel, i.e. creepers of progeny or heir, symbolizing continuity of family lineage.
