Indian American Congressman from Michigan, Shri Thanedar and his wife Shashi, met with community members in Andover and Lexington and shared his journey as a first time congressman in the US Congress and the tremendous impact he has had in his first term. He also shared his own personal life story which has become a best-seller in Marathi.
It was hosted by Sandeep Asija in Andover, MA and by Amar and Deepika Sawhney in Lexington, MA. Shri Thanedar sits on the committee on Homeland Security and the Committee on Small Business. He escorted Prime Minister Modi when he addressed the joint session of Congress. He has established the Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh American Congressional Caucus for which he serves as the Chair.
“I come from a very underprivileged background. I was born in Belgavi in Karnataka. When I completed my M.Sc Chemistry, I got admission and scholarship for a Phd program in the United States. I was rejected four times for a visa and got it the fifth time. Today I sit on the Homeland Security committee and focus on immigration and border securityâ€, said Thanedar. He described his life story including the tragedy of losing his wife to a mental health illness and being a single father for a few years prior to his second wife entering his life. His story has been published in Marathi and is a best-seller. He is very unusual in that he represents a district that is 60% African American.
“I am working to provide access to capital for small businesses. Education is also a very important priority for me. On the immigration side, I am working on removing the country quotas for H1-B and making the green card process faster. In the Hindu, Buddhist, and Sikh American caucus we are working on tackling Hinduphobia. “
He also made an earnest plea for financial support. “Re-election is not easy for any congressman, especially someone like me, who is the first Indian American to represent my predominantly African American district. I ask for your support. As an Indian American congressman I can represent your causes. We as a community need to have our presence in the Congress and I hope you will support me “
