‘Thumri Queen’ Shobha Gurtu known for her rich earthy voice, passed away at her residence in Mumbai recently following a cardiac arrest. She was 79.
Shobha began her training under her mother Menekabai Shirodkar herself a pupil of Ustad Alladiya Khan, and was also trained by Kamal Khan.
Shobha Gurtu had also created musical scores for several Marathi and Hindi movies. She was awarded the Sangeet Sahitya Academy award and the Padma Bhusan. She is survived by two sons.
Indian PM Manmohan Singh, who was in NY recently, announced that his daughters loved watching movies by Manoj Night Shyamalan and Mira Nair. Said Mr Singh at a gathering of the Indian diaspora “I am delighted to learn that Indian Americans are now also active in creative fields ranging from media to cinema. My daughters are always thrilled to watch the movies of Mr Shyamalan and Ms Nair,"
