Kaumaram – Thiruppugazh
Composed by Lalgudi G. Jayaraman
Rendered by Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi & S.P. Ramh
Tiruppugazh – Prayers in praise of Lord Subrahmanya or Lord Muruga was composed by the revered Saint Arunagirinathar who lived around 1450 A.D. He is said to have composed over 16000 songs of which only about 1300 survive. A handful of these immaculate compositions have been composed by violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman and presented by his disciples Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi & S. P. Ramh. The verses have been tuned to traditional Carnatic ragas such as Simhendramadhyamam, Natakurinji to name a few. This is compilation is a very noble effort in bringing some of Saint Arunagirinathar’s rarely heard compositions to the public.
The liner notes are excellent as they give a brief insight into the history of Saint Arunagirinathar. The actual verses are also available in the liner notes for the student of Thiruppugzh in both the English & Tamil script. The CD has been released by Charsur Digital workstation and is available for sale on www.sangeetham.com
