There were three Massachusetts hospitals that ranked in Healthgrades’ “America’s 250 Best Hospitals” list and even one hospital ranking within the top 50 in the country.

According to Healthgrades, the hospitals on the list “exhibit comprehensive high-quality care across clinical areas.” Rankings were based on performance on procedures, potential risks and predicted outcomes that are compared to actual outcomes of patients.

The Massachusetts hospital that ranked within the top 50 in the country was Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington.

Seventy-six percent of patients said they would “definitely recommend” the hospital, which is 6% higher than the national average, Healthgrades said. The website also reported that 73% of patients gave the hospital a rating of 9 or 10, which is 4% higher than the national average.

Lahey Hospital also had the best clinical ratings in critical care, gastrointestinal, neurosciences, pulmonary and spine surgery.

The two other Massachusetts hospitals that ranked within the country’s top 250 are Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence and Salem Hospital in Salem.

It was reported that 64% of Lawerence General patients would “definitely recommend” the hospital. That percent is 6% lower than the national average. However, the hospital had the best clinical ratings in gastrointestinal surgery.

Salem Hospital had 70% of its patients recommend it as a place for care — a percent equal to the national average. The hospital had the best clinical ratings in critical care, gastrointestinal, neurosciences, prostate surgery and pulmonary.

*NSMC Union Hospital was listed in the rankings but it is not operational anymore. It has since diverted to and expanded Salem Hospital.

However, the hospital still made Healthgrades’ 2023 list but was grouped under Salem Hospital.
