Harold and Kumar is the typical screwball comedy about modern day stereotypes. Although the sophomoric humor can be at times endearing, the lack of plot and character development often leaves the viewer unsatisfied.
You have Harold (John Cho), the stereotypical meek Asian computer consultant and his best friend Kumar(Kal Penn), the stereotypical Indian med-student who doesn’t really care about much. And they’re both stereotypical stoners. Although there are several interesting variations from the stereotypes and many fascinating, funny characters in the film, essentially it has all been seen before. The interesting characters, such as the Jewish Goldbergs, are often left undeveloped.
The movie provides several hilarious situations as Harold and Kumar go in search of “the perfect burger”. For example, a scene takes place between Harold, Kumar, and pick-up truck driver, which provides some laughs. From them gawking at the throbbing, puss-oozing boils on his neck to them fighting for dibs on his young and beautiful wife, this section of the movie is filled with enjoyable moments.
However, more often than not the comedy feels forced and pushed in directions that are no longer comical but simply ridiculous. The relationship between Harold and Kumar starts out interesting, but stagnates as there is no real change or cinematic development.
If you are looking for a lightweight comedy that will provide a few good laughs, Harold and Kumar is the movie for you. But, if you are looking for a well-developed film that will captivate you, look elsewhere.
