08/24/2022 Thanks to a generous gift from the Vivek and Vandana family Foundation, the Center for Emerging Markets (CEM) is proud to be part of India’s buzzing startup scene by supporting and strengthening SmartIDEAthon—which may well be one of India’s biggest social innovation pitchfests. CEM got involved for first time this year. According to Prof. Ravi Ramamurthi, the two travel scholarships were made available, courtesy of Vivek and Vandana Sharma, for 2 winning teams to visit Boston and Secondly, CEM helped bring Startup India as a cosponsor. The result was a 6-fold increase in submissions, with entries coming in from 28 states of India. The 32 semifinalists included 6 women’s teams, and the 8 finalists included 2 all-women teams. “I was blown away by the quality of ideas and the passion of these young students.†Says Prof Ramamurthi, who was part of the jury selections. SmartIDEAthon 2022 received over 1,200 submissions, from all corners of India, and represented a 6-fold increase over 2021. Submissions addressed pressing problems in Healthcare, Food and Agriculture, Clean/Green Tech, Waste Management, and Water Management. The 32 best teams traveled to GITAM U for the final rounds on August 10-11, 2022. The jury for the finale was Professor Greg Collier, Director of International Programmes, NUCEE, Professor Ravi Ramamurti, director, CEM, Dr Surabhi Gupta, Manager, Startup India, Sreedevi Devireddy, vice president, Startup Ecosystem, Xelpmoc Design and Tech Ltd and malini parmar, co-founder, StoneSoup.
