Sewa International Boston Chapter Raises $5500 for its Family Services Program

Sewa International Boston chapter organized the annual Holi event at Nara Park in Acton, MA on May 21st, 2022. The event raised awareness about Sewa’s Family Services and Ukraine Relief Programs in the local community and raised 5,500 dollars for these projects. Over 500 people consisting of Sewa donors and volunteers from the Boston metro area attended the event. Children and adults representing  seven local dance schools staged over 20 group and solo dance performances in the large open-air amphitheater at Nara Park. .

Participating in the event as the chief guest of honor, Robert "Bob" Lancia, a former
member of the Rhode Island House of Representatives and a former US Navy Chaplain appreciated the Hindu concept of Sewa Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – meaning “the whole world is one family”. He talked in admiration of the contributions of Hindu community at large in USA and Sewa’s service to the local communities.

Sewa volunteers provided details of Sewa’s
Family Services program at the event. The program leverages existing local community resources, while bringing complementary services to effectively serve the families in distress.  Services include physical, mental, and home health services, death and bereavement, counseling, aid during distress, Medicare/Medicaid or Social Security benefits restoration, legal services, senior services, child services and helping people affected by domestic violence, and poverty.

Sewa International has been raising funds for the
Ukrainian relief efforts and started a Facebook campaign to help people who are caught in this humanitarian crisis. As the Sewa Europe is providing services on the ground and the global Sewa network raises to provide logistics and monetary support, Sewa Boston chapter used the Holi event to raise awareness about this critical issue.

The Sewa Boston volunteers and high school children participating in Sewa’s
Leadership Development through Community Engagement (LEAD) program organized and managed the Holi event. In the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic, the resurgence of community spirit rang loud and clear in this year’s Sewa Holi event, giving people hope that things are indeed getting better and it is now time to get back and help the community we all live in.
