Burlington Interfaith Clergy Group Vigil

Ranjani Saigal
04/01/2022

On March 29, the Burlington Interfaith Clergy group held a vigil for Ukraine. Ranjani Saigal represented the Hindu Community. Rabbi Susan Abramson coordinated the event. Following readings by several faith leaders, a local Ukrainian, Vladimir Foygelman shared the realities on the ground.

“I am a Ukranian. After the occupation of Ukraine by USSR, Russian was considered the language of choice. Many Russians moved into Ukraine. During that period, we had no freedom. I am truly proud of being a Ukrainian” said Vladimir.

“I called my sister two days ago. After 20 years of hard work she had bought a 2 bedroom apartment in Kiev just six months ago. In Ukraine , we do not have the concept of mortgage. She paid her hard earned money. But now she said she is leaving Kiev with just a few belongings and fleeing. Her 20 year old son says he will stay on and fight. When they open the window all you can hear is the sirens blaring. It breaks my heart” said Vladimir.

His wife and he are working to collect supplies and money to send things to Ukraine. “At  times I get tired between work, family and the Ukraine support work. Then I remind myself that I am so lucky that I am safe. I have nothing to complain.”

It was indeed heart wrenching to hear him speak. The clergy hopes their prayers are heard and the war will indeed come to an end.
