Saheli announces 2021 Scholarship Winners

Saheli is proud to announce that it is continuing with its scholarship initiative that started in 2020 and has awarded the following scholarships for the Saheli 2021 Scholarship Program to deserving South Asian girls to support their college education. The scholars selected for this year’s award showed remarkable accomplishments in the areas of academics, extra-curricular participation and community service.

Saheli is pleased to announce that Ms. Dhara Patel and Ms. Astha Patel were selected as recipients of its 2021 scholarship program. Honorable mentions were awarded to Ms. Shreesha Jamkatel and Ms. Eshika Hossain.

Saheli is a community-based domestic violence response organization in Massachusetts that was founded in 1996 with the mission to empower South Asian women and their families to live safe and healthy lives.

The Saheli Scholarship Program reflects the organization’s deep commitment to support young women from South Asia in achieving their goals to effect positive change in the world, and aims to empower girls and women to become independent and educated citizens. While all the recipients have stellar academic records, it is their commitment and passion for helping others and contributing to societal good that made them stand out.

Among this year’s recipients, Dhara Patel has been attending the University of Massachusetts Lowell since Fall 2020, studying Biology/ Pre-med, and planning to be a physician. She is very highly regarded by her professors. Dhara says, “Saheli Scholarship means a lot to me personally. I feel extremely lucky and blessed to have received this scholarship as it will help me pay a part of my college expenses. I would like to thank Saheli and will always try to stay in touch with the team of Saheli “

Astha Patel, also attending the University of Massachusetts Lowell, is a member of the National Honor society and has chosen a path in the field of public health.

Astha says “As a first generation American going to college, it is confusing and stressful when it comes to paying college bills. The Saheli scholarship is very helpful, because colleges are expensive and I don’t know what I would have done if this wasn’t available.”

Shreesha Jamkatel will be attending Suffolk University. Her work supporting children in Nepal is commendable. Shreesha says, “I moved to the US when I was nine years old. When I moved here, I struggled with a lot of things bad mainly with my mental health. With the help of Saheli Scholarship, I am able to pursue my dream of being a psychologist and be a voice for women who have struggled with abuse, assault & harassment”

Eshika Hossain demonstrates significant personal grit and is pursuing a degree at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Saheli is grateful for the generous donations from supporters that enable young girls, who are often the first in their family, to attend university.
