Film Review - Lakeer

Chitra Parayath
06/02/2004

Director: Ahmed Khan
Music: AR Rahman
Cast: Suny Deol, Sunil Shetty, John Abraham, Sohail Khan, Nauheed Cyrusi

Sunny Deol, Sohail Khan, Suniel Shetty, John Abraham and Nauheed Cyrusi are the main inhabitants of the land Lakeer is drawn on. A land like no other, where caricatures of characters move about in an enchanted pepsi land, mouth incomprehensibly complicated lines and live a convoluted plot. Truth be told, this reviewer wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to visit that land; everyone there is a looker, hunks and babes all… all, except maybe for Avtar Gill. Also appealing is the fact that the hunks and babes hang out in the coolest of clothes, at the swankiest restaurants and also attend a college that has an awesome cheerleading squad. A far cry from the Bharath you and I remember!

And yes, before I forget to mention this, a storyline exists there somewhere.

There’s a horribly rich kind hearted gangster, your garden variety Mumbai Bhaiyya type; Arjun Rana(Sunny) who is obsessively in love with his foster brother Karan [Sohail Khan) and his foster sister Bindiya (Nauheed Cyrusi). There also is Sanju [Suniel Shetty] a motor mechanic who harbors an obsessive love for his little brother Saahil (John Abraham)in his steely little heart. Saahil meanwhile is obsessed with Bindiya who returns his obsessive love ignoring the obsessive love that Sohail (her foster bro’s foster bro) has for her. Throughout the film, fights and tight dialogues abound, shots ring in the air and the viewer loses all interest the first three minutes into the film.

ARRahman’s music is adequate, the less said about screenplay, direction etc the better! The actors provide much mirth, John Abraham wets his mane and squints sexily into the camera, Sohail Khan flexes his muscles (facial and pectoral) hoping to pass all that flexing off as acting, and Sunny glowers when he is not bellowing out declarations of love and revenge. Nauheed Cyrusi shows off a neat little bod is stylish costumes. Suneil Shetty sports a new look here, highlights in his hair and light contact lenses. (Btw, the poverty ridden mechanic practices his craft in a stylish swanky little motor workshop, dressed in designer duds, right in the middle of a garib basti).

Mow the lawn or read a book instead of watching this one!
