An Evening of Classical Indian Music
Saturday, June 5, 2004, 8 pm
Peabody Essex Museum
Morse Auditorium
Salem, Massachusetts
Concert & Museum admission: nonmembers $13, members $10
The Peabody Essex Museum is proud to present renowned artist Pandit
Ajay
Pohankar accompanied by his son, Abhijit Pohankar and Aditya Kalyapur
in an
evening of classical Indian music. With aesthetic beauty and impeccable
technique, Pandit (Maestro) Ajay Pohankar is a highly acclaimed artist
of
Hindustani classical music. Pt. Ajay Pohankar performs ragas, melodic
traditional classical and semi-classical music. Ragas are one of the
most
important concepts in Indian music and may be thought of as an acoustic
method of coloring the mind of the listener with an emotion. An
intelligent
and conscientious musician, Pt. Ajay has combined into his singing
style the
influences of world renowned Ustad Amir Khan. Ajay's expressive voice
has an
infinite reach - it can soothe the soul as effectively as it can
inspire the
heart.
This concert will also feature Pt. Ajay's talented son, Shri Abhijit
Pohankar, on the classical Indian keyboard. Abhijit, disciple of
Santoor
Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma, is one of the few Indian classical
keyboardists.
His sound on the keyboard is a mixture of Santoor and piano, necessary
for
great classical music. His performances create a unique effect on the
listeners, who are transported in a different world while listening to
him
play. Aditya Kalyanpur will accompany the duo on the tabla.
