USDA's MyPlate Program Made More Inclusive For Indian-American Community

Kumu Gupta

USDA (US Dept of Agriculture)'s MyPlate program (earlier known as MyPyramid and before that the Food Guide Pyramid) recently unveiled a redesigned ChoosMyPlate.gov website, which has a revamped section for "Meri Thali" talking about the program in Hindi, with more Indian items like Lassi, Mango, and Naan, for the Indian-American community. There are also some new Indian recipes in the MyPlate Kitchen part of their website:

ChooseMyPlate.gov is the website that hosts all of the MyPlate-related materials published by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). The Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (CNPP) is the organization within USDA that is responsible for MyPlate development, related content, and educational promotions. CNPP focuses its efforts on two primary objectives: Advancing and promote dietary guidance for all Americans, and conducting applied research and analyses in nutrition and consumer economics.

The ChooseMyPlate.gov website contains information on the five food groups -- fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy, a variety of downloadable and printable materials, interactive tools, educational handouts, toolkits for professionals, and the MyPlate graphic in 21 languages. MyPlate Kitchen, a subset of the ChooseMyPlate.gov website, has hundreds of recipes, many of which are budget-conscious and all of which follow the guidance of MyPlate.

"I am glad to see inclusion and recent updates to "Meri Thali" on USDA website. I was inspired by "MiPlato" -- which is the Spanish version of MyPlate -- and I introduced the concept of MyThali, using the traditional method of having balanced meals in India. So even here in America, our Indian-American community can get "Nutrition without giving up tradition" with a balanced meal, said Kumu Gupta.

And added - "I would like to thank USDA’s ChooseMyPlate program for being receptive to and working with me on my suggestions and desire to make MyPlate/Meri Thali more fun and inclusive for Indian Americans here in the US, as they launched the updated ChooseMyPlate.gov website."
