LANGAR AT GOLDEN TEMPLE
Close to 100,000 people from across the globe descend in droves at Amritsar’s Golden Temple in quest of peace, offer their prayers every day. Since the time of Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism, shrine has been following the tradition of LANGAR. Darbar Sahib site houses one of the world’s largest community kitchens, where 100,000 people eat a free meal on an average. Admission into temple as well as the Langar is open to all, irrespective of religion, caste, creed, and color. Kitchen runs around-the-clock to dish out the food. Every day, a squad of 450 volunteers works relentlessly throughout the day. On average, temple uses 12,000 kg flour, 1,500 kg rice, 13,000 kg lentils, and 2,000 kg vegetables every day. Food is served at Guru Ramdas Langar Hall. Spread over an area of 50,000 sq.ft, hall is as large as the size of three basketball courts. Langar hall can accommodate up to 5,000 people.One can have as much as he/she wants. Menu keeps changing almost every day.
