Lokvani is honored to present the 2019 Inspire Award to Dr. Raj Goyal, holding endowed chairs of Mallinckrodt Professor of Medicine and Charlotte F. and Irving W. Rabb Professor of Medicine. He is also the director of the Swallowing and Motility Program at the VA Boston Healthcare System.
He is nationally and internationally recognized for research that has advanced the diagnosis and treatment of esophageal diseases and gastrointestinal motility disorders (diseases of the gut).Dr. Goyal’s work has helped provide the foundation for the current understanding of major clinical disorders such as gastro-esophageal reflux disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and swallowing disorders, among others.
An avid researcher, Dr. Goyal has a couple of hundred publications, including papers, books, case studies, chapters and letters to his credit. He continues to engage in research and his most recent publication “Rapid gastric emptying in diabetes mellitus: Pathophysiology and clinical importance†was published in the Journal of Diabetes Complications in August 2019. His work His works have been used as references in several patents. His work on “The enteric nervous system†has been cited over 131 time.
He has received several awards in his career including the prestigious Janssen Award for Lifetime Achievement in Gastrointestinal Motility and the prestigious Middleton Award at the National Department of Veterans Affairs Research for his lifetime contribution to advancing the field of biomedical research. He has served on several committees of national importance.
He is a great philanthropist. He supports a wide variety of organizations such as IMANE, LearnQuest, Ekal, and others. He has instituted a number of endowments and scholarships at the organizations. He strongly believes in the importance of research for students who want to take up medicine as a career. As an incentive to students of Indian origin who want to choose medicine as a career, he established the Lokvani Awards that are given to Pre-Med students who are pursuing medical research at their undergraduate. He has promoted student achievements at different venues.
Goyal earned his M.B.B.S. degree from Punjab University in 1960 and completed post-graduation at Maulana Azad MedicalCollege, University of Delhi in 1965. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine, he joined the faculty at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, in 1971, and later served as professor of medicine at University of Texas Health Center until 1981.
