IIT Kharagpur, which already runs the Vinod Gupta School of Management in its campus, is planning to inaugurate the Dr B C Roy Institute of Medical Science & Research by the end of this year. Initially, the hospital will open its outdoor patients department (OPD) while the 400-bedded hospital will be thrown open to patients only next year.
Once the hospital is operational, the MBBS programme will be rolled out for 50 students in the first phase, IIT-Kgp's officiating director Prof. Sriman Kumar Bhattacharyya said. The course curriculum is being designed as per Medical Council of India (MCI) guidelines. Besides MBBS, it also plans to offer undergraduate, postgraduate degrees, allied health education courses (nurses, allied health professionals) and also offer inter- and multi-disciplinary research programs.
The IIT has already formed collaborations with the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences, Tata Medical Center and South Eastern Railway Hospital.
"There is a further plan to extend the number of seats to 100 with the scaling up of the hospital to 750-bed in phase II. Postgraduate degrees will be introduced eventually. Health care data sciences and data analytics would also be among the primary thrust areas as IIT Kharagpur ventures deeper into medical research," Bhattacharyya said.
The IIT said it will run the hospital on a cross-subsidy model in a not-for-profit mode as the day-to-day hospital management will be run by the special purpose vehicle floated under Section 8 of the Companies Act, 2013. The hospital’s board of directors will be headed by the IIT Kharagpur director and will include senior IIT faculty.
While 10% of the beds would be free, 65% of the beds would be charged as per the rates in the central and state health insurance schemes.
Project director Dr Satadal Saha said they are trying to build an entire health ecosystem and not just a hospital.
