Bio
Mary Beth Franklin is a personal finance and health issues expert for seniors. With a background as a Capitol Hill reporter, she offers an insider’s view of Washington regarding the prospects for reform of government entitlement programs and tax policy. She is a contributing editor for Investment News and writes regularly on Social Security issues and considerations. She has appeared on NBC’s Today Show and CNN to discuss a variety of issues affecting older Americans.
Mary Beth Franklin is a frequent public speaker addressing both financial industry and consumer groups on critical retirement topics such as income security, tax-efficient withdrawals, Social Security claiming strategies, career transitions, retiree health costs and long-term care issues. With a background as a Capitol Hill reporter, she can offer an insider’s view of Washington regarding the prospects for reform of government entitlement programs and tax policy. She can also serve as a moderator for industry, consumer and academic discussions of retirement security issues.
Ms. Franklin joined InvestmentNews, a weekly publication for financial advisers, as a Contributing Editor in January 2012. She writes a weekly retirement column for the highly regarded print publication and website www.InvestmentNews.com. She is the author of Maximizing Social Security Retirement Benefits.
Previously, Ms. Franklin was a senior editor of Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine and editor of the Kiplinger’s annual Retirement Planning Guide. An award-winning journalist, Franklin covered retirement planning and distribution strategies, tax planning, Social Security issues and long-term-care. She also appeared in Kiplinger’s award-winning videos on annuities, Your Do-It Yourself Pension, and long-term care, Who Cares? Kiplinger’s No-Nonsense Look at Long-Term Care and How to Pay For It.
Before joining the Kiplinger staff in 1998, Ms. Franklin was a syndicated columnist specializing in personal finance and health issues for older Americans. Her weekly personal-finance column for Maturity News Service (later called Third Age Media) appeared in more than 200 newspapers nationwide.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Franklin was a congressional reporter for United Press International covering tax policy and federal budget issues. She has written numerous articles for the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune and a variety of magazines. She has appeared on many national and local television and radio programs including NBC's Today show, Meet the Press, the CBS Early Show, CNN, CNBC, PBS’s WealthTrack with Consuelo Mack and National Public Radio’s Morning Edition.
Ms. Franklin received a Bachelor of Arts in communications from American University, in Washington, D.C., and currently serves as a professional mentor to graduate students in AU’s journalism program. She completed the Certified Financial Planning certificate program at the University of Virginia in April 2013
She serves on the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards’ advisory panel for its Women’s Initiative as well as on the National Academy of Social Insurance’s (NASI) advisory panel on When to Claim Social Security .
