Arpanam 2019
A Tribute To The Composers by the Sruthilayaa School of Music

It was that time of the season again when music and dance schools were bustling with various activities to showcase their talents. May 18th , 2019 was one such important day for the Sruthilayaa School of Carnatic Music.

The School celebrated its 11th annual day in a grandeur way at the St.John's High School in Shrewsbury.  The program promptly began with an invocation sloka to the Lord Ganesha and Guru.

The Brochure handed out to the audience proved to be useful in educating them about the planned performances.

The children performing the Carnatic Choir ensemble gave a fitting start to the splendid line up of performances. It was a special feast to the eye to view the tiny tots seated in a gallery format and sing melodiously to the thalam in rhythm . These young kids rendered Sri Muthuswamy Dikashitar songs in a catchy tune and kept the audience rapt. It was amazing to witness such young children perform so well to these songs in Sankarabharanam ragam set to Adi,Rupakam and Eka thalams.

This was closely followed by stupendous group presentations by various composers - Sri. Papanasam Sivan , St Thyagaraja , Sri. Lalgudi Jayaraman , Sri. Purandara Dasa to name a few.

Mahaganapathim in Nattai was rendered fabulously with kalpana swarams delivered innovatively by the students. The students performed Sabhapathikku in Abhogi Ragam in a splendid fashion with great sincerity and dedication.

Another well received performance was Swagatham Krishna in Mohanam ragam composed by Sri.Oothukaadu Venkatakavi. Being Vaikasi Visakam , Kaa va va was an apt dedication to the Lord Muruga in ragam Varaali. This complicated Krithi was sung beautifully with lot of devotion and dedication. Kudos to the girls!A fast paced , foot tapping song Brahmam Okate in Bowli was sung in good coordination by the senior students of the school. The senior students performed some rare composition like Nivegathi in Nalinakanthi , Ramincuva in Supposini and Nenarunchara in Simhavahini, Baro Krishnayya in Ragamalika. The delightful evening ended with a Behag Thillana performed by adept students of the school who had underwent several hours of rigorous practice.

Overall the event was a grand success. The students definitely did make their teacher Smt.Uma Sankar very proud. All the performances testified the effective training provided by Smt. Uma . The students exhibited their thorough practice , commitment and wholeheartedness via their performances.

The accompanying artists - Ksheeraja Ramanujam on the Violin , Uma Sridharan on the Veena , Naresh Vytheeswaran on the Flute , Varun Ganeshan , Sudar Meyyappan and Saketh Jayanthi on the Mridangam   supported and complemented each other well thereby supporting the students remarkably with their singing. Smt. Uma came up on stage to distribute the certificates and the trophies along with a heartwarming thank you note . Following that all the school students lined up on stage so the audience could capture a sight of all the school students with their teacher. Such was a treat to all the Rasikas of the New England region to enjoy a marvelous evening with spectacular vocal performances!

We are looking forward to more such performances from the students of Sruthilayaa ! Kudos to the Teacher and Students of the school !

Our sincere thanks to Smt. Hema Balasubramaniam (India) who helped us with weaving the songs together for the choir. Dr. Pravin Sitaram (Shrewsbury) who helped us train the students for the program.  Smt. Villianur Lalitha (D.C) for helping her student coordinate with us on the Veena.   Last but not the least, our sincere thanks to all the parent volunteers who put their heart and soul into arrangements of the program which was commendable. I also thank Uma for giving me an opportunity to be a part of the fun loving MC team. Srividya , Meenakshi and I had an enjoyable time hosting the event with fun facts. We engaged in an interesting conversation style compering and kept the audience attentive. Thanks to Aravind for the entertaining Carnatic quiz session which proved to be amusing and kept the audience enthusiastic during the break time.
