Press Release 05/22/2019
Akshaya Patra Foundation USA hosted its annual Boston Benefit Gala on Sunday, May 5th at the Newton Marriott in Massachusetts. This event was attended by over 500 business, non-profit, government and philanthropic leaders. The Gala raised funds to enable us to feed 1.76 million children (and counting!) across India and provide them with the programs and support they need to thrive and grow.
Our Keynote speaker for this event, Rishad Tobaccowala, Chief Growth Officer and member of the Management Committee of Publicis Groupe, kicked off the evening. The CEO of AP, Vandana Tilak, spoke next and shared a compelling presentation about the organization and its mission. The event also included special guests, Gururaj ‘Desh’ Deshpande who serves as Board Chairman for TAPF USA along with his wife, Jaishree.
12-year-old Youth Ambassador, Jaya Kolluri shared her recent kitchen visit experience. She gave an inspiring presentation about her visit to a kitchen and school in Hyderabad, India where she conducted a series of interviews with the principal and students.
Akshaya Patra US would like to thanks the gala committee and our dedicated families, friends, staff & volunteers for their vision, direction and support. We would also like to thank this year’s sponsors and attendees - we are overwhelmed and immensely grateful for your financial and moral support.
Akshaya Patra US is thrilled to announce the introduction of a new program called ‘Power of One’ that was launched at the Boston gala. This program allows you to choose the number of meals and the exact region you would like to sponsor on a special day, like on your birthday or anniversary. For more information on this exciting program, please contact us at contact@apusa.org.
In India, millions of children suffer from extreme hunger and as a result, their access to education is limited. From our humble beginnings, providing 1,500 free meals to underprivileged children in 2000, Akshaya Patra has grown to be the world’s largest secular school lunch program, serving 1.76 million nutritious meals everyday to government school children aged, 6-14 years old. Our 43 ISO-standard kitchens prepare between 10,000 to 250,000 meals in 6 hours and 800+ trucks transport these meals to schools, 6 days a week. Our mission is to reach 5 million children every day by 2025. A culture of innovation & improvement and our ability to strategically work with our partners has enabled us to be the largest midday meal program in the world.
