2019 North South Foundation Regional Educational Bee contests concludes!
North South Foundation (NSF) is a non-profit organization that was established 30 years ago in 1989. The mission of the organization is to provide college scholarships to economically poor, bright kids in India. These scholarships are funded by fees collected from educational bees conducted across 89 chapters in the US. Over 20,000 scholarships have been disbursed thus far, changing the lives of many scholarship recipients and their families!
NSF conducts various contests including Spelling, Vocabulary, Math, Geography, Science, Brain, Public Speaking, History and Essay Writing, over three weekends between March and April each year. NSF Massachusetts chapter conducted contests at TUFTS University on April 7th and at Fitchburg State University(FSU) during April 27th -28th weekend. Over 550 kids in grades Kindergarten to 12 participated in the two centers, while NSF had over 16,000 registrations nationwide!
Under the leadership of Chapter Directors (CDs) Mani Santhanam for Cambridge chapter and Santosh Sapkal for Worcester chapter and Technical Leads Dr. Meledath Govindan & Madavi Oliver, the Massachusetts chapters successfully completed the contests.
A combined awards ceremony was held at Kent Hall at FSU on Sunday, April 28th to recognize all the contestants and award trophies to the winners of the competitions. Dr. Kris Iyer, the Co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Spring Bank Pharmaceuticals, an IND-stage drug discovery company presided over the awards ceremony. With over 28 years of experience in the biotech and pharma industry, Dr. Iyer has authored more than 110 scientific publications and has 200 US and international patents filed and issued in his name. Born and raised in a tiny village in Kerala, Dr. Iyer worked his way to become a successful entrepreneur and recipient of several prestigious awards in the Pharmaceutical field. He gave an inspirational speech that connected well with the audience, especially the kids! All the participants and winners of the bees received medals and trophies from Dr. Iyer.
The CDs from the two centers briefly spoke about the work of NSF and their roles within the organization.
Ramesh Govindan, son of Geeta & Dr. Meledath Govindan, who participated in NSF contests as a young kid and now volunteers for the organization shared his experiences of the positive impact NSF has had on his life’s journey. He encouraged the kids to keep competing and learning more and more each year.
