Anil Saigal 03/01/2019 TiE Boston kicked off 2019 with a new Monthly Networking and Speaker Event Series. The event was hosted by MBBP in Waltham, MA. It featured William Kerr. Professor at Harvard Business School and author of "The Gift of Global Talent." Global Talent is one of scarcest resources today. The top five common surnames of founders of Italian Company during the period Jan-Aug ’15 were Hu, Chen, Singh, Rossi and Wand. The share of US domestic inventions by ethnic inventors has increased from 1 in 12 in 1975 to 1 in 3.5 in 2017. In the same the period, the number of patents as a percentage of US patents by Chinese and Indian in the SF Bay Area has increased from 1 in 220 to 1 in 12. This is more than the patents of the lowest 28 states combined. This has led to concentration to work in certain cities and states rather than being spread out across the country. In the Boston area, this has led to concentration of companies in the Cambridge area from the 128 belt along with exorbitant increases in real estate prices. Thirty percent of the entrepreneurs in MA are immigrant, the 7th highest in the nation. Entrepreneurs from different countries often tend to focus in certain industries such as people from Gujrat in hotel/motel, from Punjab in stores, from Vietnam in nail care and from Korea in dry cleaning businesses. It is expected that by 2030, 50% of 300M young college graduates will be from China and India compared to only 18% from Western Europe and North America. Hence it is important to carefully look at the social and immigration policies in the search for global talent in order to remain competitive.
